Oil, Solar, Desalinization...
A Little known Cananian Oil Sands Play...
Plus, a New Solar ETF, and new Solar and Desalinization Trades on Deck...
Desalinization:
Oil/energy prices, food shortages and the coming global clean water crisis are three of the most compelling challenges of our time. I've talked about oil and food here before and water more recently in G3 Global Options.
As I've said before, the lack of potable water is threatening to become a global crisis which could someday soon dwarf all others. The human body needs water every day -- and lots of it -- to survive. So if you think the food shortages caused huge riots, just wait until the water riots!
Desalination on a very large scale is the only technology that has the potential to solve the coming global water shortage. Oceans cover nearly 75% of the world.
I discussed in detail in G3 Global Options why I believe the # 1 solution to the global water shortage is desalinization, and I gave subscribers a trade which may take a little time to mature. Now, I'm also looking closely at another, less visible and less well known, trade with huge potential. You'll be hearing more soon about this one but I still have a little more research to do...
Canadian Oil Sands:
The # 1 best near-term alternative to sky-high oil prices: Canadian oil sands
Most of the major players have already seen their shares skyrocket and I wouldn't be advising more than a modest position in them at these levels as most of the potential is already priced in the shares. These big dogs include the likes of Devon Energy (DVN) and Suncor Energy (SU). If you do buy a small position in these, I would advise a 10% or so stop.
But I've got my eye on some lesser known players which offer some surprising potential. I'll be giving more details, including the specific options plays, soon in G3 Global Options...
Thin Film Solar - Behind the Scenes:
Canadian oil sands offer the best short-term hedge against sky-high oil, but I believe "thin film" solar offers the best longer term play. So I've been digging through the solar players as well, especially in the thin film arena that involves printing solar sheets like paper out of a printer and especially the lesser known names. We've been nailing some nice profits on the silicon-based solar players like LDK Solar (LDK) and Suntech Power (STP), but thin film will likely outperform the silicon solar players over the long term.
Right now the major thin film players, such as First Solar (FSLR) and Energy Conversion Devices (ENER), have strong exposure to this trend - but their shares are too pricey after strong rallies. Like the oil sands, if you buy in, I would advise small positions and using stops.
There's also a recently launched solar-based ETF: Market Vectors Solar Energy (KWT) which is interesting and a reasonable way to play all the major solar companies, but since it based largely on high-flyers like the above and also the companies with lower potential, I would invest modestly.
However, there are some solar minor players, behind the scenes and with concentrated exposure to thin film, which are piquing my interest...
